AR Kick-off Celebration

As you have heard before, Gilbert Elementary is a Master School of Renaissance, and one of our many reading initiatives is Accelerated Reader. Each year we have a huge kick-off assembly and get our students pumped up about reading. This year our theme was "Reach for the Stars, READ!" We set a goal of 25,000 AR points for the school. We asked that our students dress up as celestial bodies or terrestrial beings to show school spirit. We had several activities during the assembly, including a costume contest, a game called Shooting Stars, and another called Doughnuts in Space. Theme music was playing, and we even had a visit from our Gilbert Gator. Our principal, Mr. Brad Hayes, showed his school spirit by donning the Gilbert Gator costume. A fun time was had by all.

ITBS Testing for 4th Grade

Students in fourth grade will begin the Iowa Test of Basic Skills on Monday morning. The testing schedule is as follows:
  • Monday: Vocabulary and Reading
  • Tuesday: Language
  • Wednesday: Math
  • Thursday: Social Studies
  • Friday: Science
Originally, fourth graders were taking the CogAT the week of August 25-29. We will not have to administer this test.

A few things to keep in mind for ITBS testing:
  • Be present! Come to school each day during testing.
  • Be on time! Testing begins each day at 8:00 a.m.
  • Get a good night's sleep.
  • Eat a good breakfast.
  • Do your BEST!

Box Tops

Clip & Save Box Tops!

Greetings! Our school will collect Box Tops again this year. They are available on many of the products you buy. For a complete list of products click here

Every Box Top you bring in is worth $0.10. With your help, we raised $1005 last year. Since beginning the program in 2002, our school has raised $7211. Awesome! In the past, we've used the money to purchase books for our library, t-shirts for the entire school, and other needed items.

To encourage participation, we've created a friendly competition between all classes at Gilbert Elementary. Each Box Top is worth 10 points. Students turn in these Box Tops to their teacher. Teachers keep a running total and report to the coordinator. The class with the most points at the end of each month is the winner. Past treats have included Sonic Coney Dogs, Krystal burgers, pizza, ice cream sundaes, icees, and much more.

Our goal this year is to raise $1200 or more. If everyone brings in three Box Tops each, we'll meet and exceed our goal in no time. Coach Neal will be our school coordinator this year. He'll keep us updated on how we're doing.

Parents may also register to receive coupons, recipes, and other helpful information by visiting the Box Tops for Education website or by clicking here

Thanks!

A huge thanks to everyone who braved the storms and rain to attend Open House. We had 230 people sign in for this event. We hope everyone had a chance to meet our new leadership team, Mr. Brad Hayes and Mr. Matt Harris.

Our first day of school went very well. Students met with Mr. Hayes and Mr. Harris during their activity time today for a brief introduction to our expectations as well as rewards for good behavior and attendance. We're off to a great start!

Please return student emergency cards, lunch forms, and other information (large brown envelope) as soon as possible.
