Pennies for Patients

Dear Gilbert Families,

On Monday, February 23rd, we will begin our Pennies for Patients charity fundraiser here at Gilbert. Pennies for Patients is an annual fundraiser where the students can bring in change to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. All money raised will be donated to help find cures for blood diseases/cancers. Last year alone, Georgia schools raised $500,000.00 for Pennies for Patients.

Students who wish to participate should bring in different coins each day. Following is the schedule for the week:

Monday - Penny Day
Tuesday - Nickel Day
Wednesday - Dime Day
Thursday - Quarter Day
Friday - Dollar Day

We are confident we can raise at least $500 for this worthy cause, and are hopeful our students will learn a lot about having compassion and showing goodwill towards others in need. If you should have any questions regarding this project, please contact our school counselor, Jana Marshall at (706) 638-2432.

First Grade Goes Green

First Graders at Gilbert Elementary are kicking off a new recycling project. Mrs. Eager had the idea to recycle paper after seeing so much waste at school. We agreed and decided to take action. Some of our first grade classes decorated paper boxes, rescued from the trash of course, with recycling messages. Other classes made posters to encourage everyone's involvement. Each first grade teacher chose one to two students from her class to do a short presentation on Friday's Morning News Show, which is shown over closed circuit to the entire school. Mrs. Epperson composed a wonderful song for these students to sing and for all first graders to learn. Following the news, boxes were distributed to each classroom.

On Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Eager took our first load of paper to be recycled. She discovered the recycling center will take all paper as long as it is free of staples. Magazines, catalogs, and old phone books can be recycled. Newspapers are also accepted. So, if you would like to help or clean out your old magazines and such, send them to school with your child. Every little bit helps! It's up to us to help take care of our planet!

Recycling Song

We are the Gilbert Gators.
We recycle every day.
We take back all our paper
And crush our cans this way.
We will make our Earth better
for us and everyone!
We are the Gilbert Gators
and recycling is FUN!

GO GREEN!

Gilbert's Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Miss Amanda Higdon!
She was chosen as Gilbert Elementary School's
Teacher of the year for 2008-09.

Miss Higdon is a first grade teacher. She came to Gilbert in 2001. She taught Kindergarten for one year prior to moving to first grade. She is a compassionate teacher who really cares for her students. She makes learning fun for everyone!

Miss Higdon was in great company. Originally, 38 teachers were nominated for teacher of the year. The field was narrowed down to three teachers. Mrs. Leigh Brooks (Kindergarten) and Mrs. Kesha Swanson (Special Education) were also nominated! We are fortunate to have such wonderful teachers at Gilbert Elementary School!
