Come Read with Me!

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

You are invited to a special event at Gilbert Elementary. We would like for you to come visit our book fair, have pastries, and spend time reading with your child(ren)! This is a perfect time to share the love of reading with your child.

When you arrive, you will sign in, pick up your child from his or her classroom, and return to the cafeteria. There will be a selection of books on different reading level from which you may choose. We will have reading areas set up for you and your child to sit and read. You may visit the book fair at any time during the hour. We look forward to seeing you there.

May-mester

Dear Gilbert Parents,

I am pleased to announce that all Walker County Schools will be participating in a new instructional schedule and program for the remainder of this school year. This program is called May-mester. Students in grades 1 through 5 will be receiving additional instruction in Math and Reading. This additional instruction will serve as a remediation for any who might need to retake a portion of the CRCT during the last week of May. May-mester also provides schools the opportunity to offer accelerated classes. Accelerated classes will introduce students to standards for next year's curriculum. A large percentage of the accelerated classes will focus on upcoming science and social studies standards. All students will continue to follow the same activity, recess, and lunch schedules. We are hopeful and excited about this new approach to remediation and accelerated teaching.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mr. Brad Hayes
Principal Gilbert Elementary School

CRCT Information

What is the CRCT test? What is its purpose?

The CRCT acronym stands for Criterion Referenced Competency Test. It is designed to measure how well students have acquired the knowledge and skills described in the Georgia Performance Standards. The assessments yield information on academic achievement at the student, class, school, system, and state levels. This information is used to diagnose individual student strengths and weaknesses as related to the instruction of the GPS, and to gauge the quality of education throughout Georgia.

What content areas and grade levels are tested?

Georgia law, as amended by the A+ Education Reform Act of 2000, requires that all students in grades one through eight take the CRCT in the content areas of reading, English/language arts, and mathematics. Students in grades three through eight are also assessed in science and social studies. The CRCT only assesses the content standards outlined in the GPS.

Information was taken from the Department of Education's website. You may read more information by clicking here.

CRCT Testing Schedule
  • April 20 Reading
  • April 21 Language Arts
  • April 22 Mathematics
  • April 23 Science
  • April 24 Social Studies

Helpful Hints and Tips:
  • Testing begins at 8:00 a.m. each day. Please make plans to have your child to school on time. Students who arrive after the 8 a.m. start will remain in the office so that testing will not be disturbed. Attendance is very important!
  • Eat a healthy breakfast. Whether it's cereal and toast or breakfast pizza, you need to eat a good breakfast. Numerous research studies have shown that students do better in school provided they have a good nutritious breakfast. Gilbert serves breakfast each day beginning at 7:15 a.m. until 7:40 a.m. I think the cost is $0.75 per student.
  • Get a good night's sleep. Go to bed early! You won't have any homework during the week of the CRCT. Most elementary school aged children should get 8-10 hours of sleep each night.
  • Don't stress! Just do your best! Believe you will do well. We believe in you!
