Happy 100th Day!

Happy 100th Day!

Students and teachers at Gilbert celebrated the 100th day of school on Tuesday, January 26th. We had lots of fun learning about and exploring the number 100! We jumped 100 times, walked 100 steps, made 100th day snack mix, made 100th day glasses and hats, graphed 100 things, and much, much more!

Our kindergarten classes set a goal upon returning to school after the Christmas holidays. Their goal was for each class to collect 100 canned goods in order to help local food banks. Miss Morgan announced on Tuesday morning that they exceeded their goal! They brought in 528 food items! What generous hearts our kindergartners have!

Congratulations to Mrs. Erzaline Shults! At a recent ceremony, Mr. Brad Hayes presented Ms. Shults with a certificate and resolution in appreciation of all the hard work that Ms. Shults and her husband do for Gilbert Elementary School. Ms. Shults is currently serving as the PTO president and worked with the school's WeeTeach program at Gilbert.

Change for Haiti

Help us change lives for children in Haiti!

Students and staff in Walker County Schools are closely following the tragic news and heartfelt stories stemming from the disastrous earthquake and aftershocks in Haiti. As the desperate plight of the wounded and homeless, many of them children, comes to light, concern and care for these families and orphaned children to grow.

In times past, each school has conducted humanitarian fundraising projects individually for needs important to their students and staff. However, with the enormity of the current and future needs in Haiti, the entire district is joining together for one concentrated effort, "Change for Haiti".

From Monday, January 25th, through Friday, February 26th, all Walker County Schools will collect coins for "Change for Haiti". Donations may be submitted through students or employees or directly delivered to a Parent Involvement Specialist at any Walker County school. Donations will be channeled to the American Red Cross International Response Fund to continue their humanitarian efforts such as food, water, temporary housing, basic supplies, first aid, and family linking services.

"Change for Haiti" is not designed as a one-time effort only to clean up the aftermath of the earthquake although much is needed to accomplish that task. Students in Walker County Schools desire to promote change in the lives of Haitian children, to help create a better future, such as purifying the water supply through Red Cross assistance.

To help change the lives of children in Haiti, bring coins to Walker County Schools in support of "Change for Haiti"!

As an extra incentive, Mr. Hayes and Mr. Harris are offering a pizza party to the two classes raising the most funds for Change for Haiti. Mrs. Allmon, our Parent Involvement Specialist, has created a poster for each class to track their progress. Let's all do our best to help those affected by the horrible earthquake in Haiti.
