The Young Author's Fair winners were given the royal treatment on Thursday, March 24 at Gilbert Elementary. Every student in the building was called into the gym for a school wide assembly. The committee members had worked for many hours coming up with the perfect plan to ensure that these young writers were honored in a manner befitting royalty. This theme was carried throughout the entire presentation of awards. The winners walked up to the stage on a red carpet. Mr. Harris, passed out their plaques, Mrs. Rhonda Epperson crowned the winners, Mrs. Kipp passed out certificates, and Dianne Richardson and Karen Neal put on their robes and handed out their prizes. The winners were applauded by their peers as they stood before them for a group photograph. After the ceremony the young authors invited their parents to a special celebration where they shared their stories with them and enjoyed refreshments. The overall consensus after the event, was that it was by far the best presentation Gilbert has ever had for these very deserving young authors. Great job!!!

Gilbert's Authors Tea

Students at Gilbert Elementary participated in the Student Treasures program this year. Student Treasures publishing program allows every student in our school the opportunity to become a published author! Publishing student writing encourages the reluctant writer, strengthens kids' self-confidence, rewards interest and promotes a positive attitude towards literature. We had a wonderful turnout for this event. Students were so proud of their books. Check out the photos!

Thoughts & Quotations

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always try just one more time."   ~ Thomas Alva Edison

Thomas A. Edison was an American inventor, scientist, and businessman. Building on the contributions of other developers over the previous three quarters of a century, Edison made significant improvements to the idea of incandescent, and wound up in the public consciousness as "the inventor" of the light bulb.

He did not experience success the first time he worked on his version of a light bulb. He often said, "I didn't fail, I found 2,000 ways how not to make a light bulb; I only need to find one way to make it work." Can you imagine what would have happened if Edison simply gave up and chose not to try again? Would we have light bulbs? Would someone else have invented them?

Thomas Edison was a very interesting man. He wasn't the best of students when he was younger. Edison had hearing problems that led to difficulties with school. His mother taught him at home. She taught him reading, writing, and arithmetic. It was reading that quickly became his favorite. He loved reading about science and was always asking questions. To learn more about Thomas Edison click here.

Hopefully, you will share Edison's outlook on our upcoming CRCT. We've all worked so hard this school year. It's crunch time for us, so to speak. You may be stressed or worried about the test. But, like Thomas Edison, we hope you won't give up! You'll try your best on the test and you, too, will succeed!

Gilbert's Teacher of the Year!

Each year, every school in Walker County has the privilege of choosing a member of their faculty to participate in the county's Teacher of the Year event. Gilbert's teachers were asked to nominate one of their peers to receive this honor and represent our school. Many dedicated teachers were nominated. The competition was narrowed down to the top three vote earners.  Congratulations to Mrs. Brooks, Mr. Lemons, and Mrs. Swanson!  After a final round of voting, we are happy to announce Gilbert's Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Leigh Brooks.

Mrs. Brooks is currently our fourth grade Writing and Science teacher. She has been with Gilbert's students and faculty for the past fourteen years. Mrs. Brooks has taught both Kindergarten and fourth grades. She is a wonderful asset to our staff and an inspiring teacher for her students. We all wish her well as she represents Gilbert in the county's Teacher of the Year event.
Mr. Harris presents Mrs. Brooks with a flower arrangement.
