What is Red Ribbon Week?
The Red Ribbon Week Celebration is a drug and alcohol abuse awareness campaign observed annually throughout the nation during the last full week of October. While Red Ribbon Week is not meant to serve as a prevention or early intervention program, it is meant to promote awareness of, and hopefully reduce, illegal drug use and abuse in our country.
This year's theme: Step It Up: A Call to Action!
The Red Ribbon Pledge: No use of illegal drugs, no illegal use of legal drugs!
History of Red Ribbon Week: Red Ribbon Week began after the 1985 death of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. He had been working undercover in Mexico for four years, and his work had ld to the discovery of a multi-million dollar drug manufacturing operation. The leaders of the drug cartels were angered by this and sought revenge on Agent Camarena, which resulted in his death.
