CRCT Week is HERE!

CRCT Testing week is here! Thanks to our Pep Rally on Friday, we are READY!

Students and faculty gathered in the gym Friday afternoon to get ourselves pumped and excited about next week! LHS band members were on hand to pump up the crowd! Our MC of the event was Mrs. Scott. She kept things moving! Gilbert's Gator girls (Singletary, Massey, Wallin, Hodge, and Neal) led students in cheers. The drama team (Wright, Burnette, Rogers, Quinn, Brooks, Richardson, and Epperson) performed skits of testing dos and don'ts. Third through fifth graders wrote their testing pledges on paper links. We combined those into chains, which are on display in the halls. Thank you, Mr. Harris for getting students excited about "showing" what they know! We know our students are ready to do their BEST!

What is the CRCT?

Why do we have to take it?

Some of you may be wondering the purpose of this test. The CRCT is designed to measure how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the Georgia Performance Standards. The assessments yield information on academic achievement at the student, class, school, system, and state levels. This information is used to diagnose individual student strengths and weaknesses as related to the instruction of the CCGPS, and to gauge the quality of education throughout Georgia.

Testing begins on Monday! The schedule for the week is as follows:
  • Monday - Reading
  • Tuesday - English/ Language Arts
  • Wednesday - Mathematics
  • Thursday - Science
  • Friday - Social Studies
Here's a few tips to remember:
  1. Be sure to go to bed at a decent time. Don't stay up late! You need at least 8-10 hours of rest each night. Well rested students do better on tests!
  2. Eat a good breakfast! Remember breakfast is served each day at school between 7 - 7:30. You'll do better with concentration if you're not worried about being hungry.
  3. Dress comfortably! Wear loose fitting clothing.
  4. Be on time to school each day! Testing begins promptly at 8 a.m. Late students will be held until the first session is complete.
  5. Do your best! Don't stress. We believe in you! You will do well!

Congrats to two of our Gilbert Gators!

Anna Valle and Anna Garcia will be recognized at Monday's Board of Education meeting. Both of these students had works of art that were chose to be displayed at the Capitol Art Show in Atlanta. Well done, girls! We are very proud of you!

Comming Soon...

Mrs. Massey has created a pretty cool website to showcase our upcoming book fair. This is an awesome opportunity to add to your book collection! The book fair will begin on Friday, May 3rd with classes visiting to preview the offerings and making wish lists. Students may begin to purchase books on Monday, May 6. The fair will be open each day May 6-9 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There's a special event to celebrate Mother's Day on May 10th. On Friday May 10, the book fair will be open until 12:00.

For all the girls who love the Pinkalicious books by Victoria Kann, there's a new one out! It's called Emeraldalicious! In this story, Pinkalicious and her brother take a trip to the park only to find it not as clean as they remember.

Boys, don't worry! There are plenty of books just right for you, too! I know my third grade boys are loving the Geronimo Stilton series, Goosebumps series, and the new series called, Stick Dog by Tom Watson.

Of course, everyone loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books! The newest one, The Third Wheel, will also be available. Have you read it yet? Love is in the air in this book! So, check in with Greg and Rowley as they figure out what to do for the Valentine's Dance at school!

What have you read lately?

I hope to see you at the book fair! Until then, be sure to check out the webpage for Gilbert's Book Fair.  You can click here to visit the site!

Rezoning Town Hall Meeting

As many of you know, Walker County will be adding a new school next year. Due to this addition, our county will need to rezone. This process is designed to alleviate crowding in some schools as well as populate the new one. Each elementary and middle school may be affected by rezoning. To find out more information, you are invited to a Town Hall meeting on Thursday, April 4 @ 6:30. Superintendent Raines and other staff members will be on hand to handle questions and explain the process.

The new school, Saddle Ridge School, is designed for grades K-8. It is located just south of the Walker County Civic Center in Rock Spring. For more information about Saddle Ridge, visit the Walker County School site.  http://www.walkerschools.org/

Got Science?

We do! We hope you'll join in the learning fun on Thursday, April 4 @ 6 p.m. The Creative Discovery Museum will be here to share hands-on science activities. Mr. Harris is offering each student that attends this free event a homework pass, which will allow students to miss one homework assignment of their choice. Will I see you there?

Walker County Science Fair

The Walker County Science Fair will be held May 15-17 at the James A. Smith Planetarium. All students are encourage to participate.

Gilbert's Science Fair will be held May 13-14. Projects will be judged at the school level. All projects which earn a first place ribbon will proceed to the County Fair at the Planetarium. Gilbert's theme for spring is "Going Green". We only have one planet to share. Shouldn't we invest our efforts to leave it better for our children. We'd love for science projects related to this theme. Check with your child's teacher for a list of your grade level standards. You can Google Environmental science fair projects for ideas or click any of the links below.

Project boards are available for sale in the office.
Watch for more information to be sent home soon!
