Outdoor Education

Our school is moving forward with STEM education. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. We focus on these areas together not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, but also because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively. STEM is an interdisciplinary and applied approach that is coupled with hands-on, problem-based learning. Just before school began this year, Gilbert's teachers attending outdoor education training with Dr. Jean Lomino.  Dr. Lomino challenged us to broaden our definition of the traditional classroom.

At Gilbert Elementary School, we are expanding the traditional boundaries of classroom learning. Third grade teachers and students have expanded our classroom to include the outdoors. We've made frequent visits to the outdoor classroom. We have cleaned out the garden and replanted our fall crops including lettuce varieties, brussel sprouts, kale, and spinach. Here's a peek of us "tuning in" to nature!

Close your eyes and listen. What do you hear?

Mrs. Thornton talks about the animal habitats that are here on our campus.
