News Release…from Walker County Schools
All Walker County Schools will extend their normal school
day on Monday, August 21st by approximately 30 minutes to take full
educational advantage of the solar eclipse.
We have acquired ISO 12312-2 approved solar eclipse glasses for every
student to use during this once in a lifetime experience. We are currently planning activities at each
grade level to compliment and enhance standards across the curriculum. The event will be live streaming in every
classroom to assure all students have the opportunity to participate. Teachers will have discussions prior to the
event that will include connections to all subject areas as well as proper
safety when viewing a solar eclipse. We
will have students electronically documenting the events of the day across the
District and will archive those for use in classrooms in the future. We will also be sharing highlights of the day
on all social media pages. We are
excited about the possibilities associated with this amazing event for each of
our students.
As an additional bonus, we will be offering an eclipse show
to the general public at our James A. Smith Planetarium throughout the weeks
prior to the event and on the day of the event. Information regarding show times and pricing
is available at www.walkerschools.org
then click on Smith Planetarium.
