Red Ribbon Week October 23-27, 2017

We will be observing our annual “Red Ribbon Week” celebration during the week of October 23 – October 27, 2017. In observance of Red Ribbon Week, we will have dress up theme days Monday – Friday of that week. These theme days are as follows:
  • Monday, October 23 = “Team Up Against Drugs” – dress in your team attire
  • Tuesday, October 24 = "Put a Cap on Drugs" - wear your favorite or silliest hat
  • Wednesday, October 25= “Don’t Let Drugs Ruin Your Dreams” – wear your pajamas to school
  • Thursday, October 26 = “Say Boo To Drugs” – dress as your favorite book character
  • Friday, October 27 = “Wear Red Day” – dress in red to support Red Ribbon Week

What is Red Ribbon Week?

The Red Ribbon Week Celebration is a drug and alcohol abuse awareness campaign observed annually throughout the nation during the last full week in October each year. It is meant to promote awareness of and, hopefully, reduce illegal drug/substance use and abuse in our country. Red Ribbon Week is also a week that honors the life of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena who spent his adult life fighting the war on drugs and the Mexican drug cartel. Unfortunately, he lost his life in the line of duty and Red Ribbon Week originally began in his community as a remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice he made for this cause.

This Year’s Red Ribbon Week Theme: “Your Future is Key, So Stay Drug Free”

The Red Ribbon Pledge: “ No use of illegal drugs, no illegal use of legal drugs!”

Georgia Milestone Testing Dates

Georgia Milestone Testing is on the horizon for us, Gilbert Gators! The dates have been set and students are busy reviewing skills to prepare for this assessment. We wanted to get the dates out to everyone as soon as possible. Attendance during the testing window is of utmost importance. Scheduling retakes for missed portions of the test is difficult. Please consider the following dates when scheduling appointments during testing.
  • April 13 ELA Sections 1-2
  • April 14 ELA Section 3
  • April 15 Math Sections 1-2
  • April 19 Science Sections 1-2
  • April 20 Social Studies Sections 1-2

What is the Milestones Assessment?

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System (Georgia Milestones) is a comprehensive summative assessment program spanning grades 3 through high school.  Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.  Students in grades 3 through 8 take an end-of-grade assessment in each content area, while high school students take an end-of-course assessment for each of the ten courses designated by the State Board of Education.
Features the Georgia Milestone Assessment System include:
  • open-ended (constructed-response) items in language arts and mathematics (all grades and courses);
  • a writing component (in response to passages read by students) at every grade level and course within the language arts assessment;
  • norm-referenced items in all content areas and courses, to complement the criterion-referenced information and to provide a national comparison; and
  • transition to online administration over time, with online administration considered the primary mode of administration and paper-pencil as back-up until the transition is complete.

It's almost that time again! School is just around the corner! Teachers return to Gilbert Elementary on Wednesday, August 5. We will be busy decorating our classrooms and making plans for a great school year.

Gilbert Elementary has a few new faces! We have added two new 4th grade teachers, Mrs. Ashley Frogg and Mrs. Linda May. Mr. Ben Cherry returns to Gilbert to take over the Science Lab, as Mr. McWhorter will be our Kaleidoscope teacher. We hope you'll join us in making our new teachers feel like part of the Gilbert family.

By now, most of you have received your back to school letter from Mr. Harris. You've discovered which teacher you'll have for class. We hope you're making plans to drop in for Open House on Tuesday, August 11th from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Come out and meet your teacher and locate your classroom.

The supply list was included in the back to school letters. If you didn't receive one, you may download a copy or check your grade level's list by clicking the Supply List link on the right hand side of this page.

Enjoy these last few days of summer break! We'll see you soon!
